BAUHAUS GROUP
Since my first trip to Berlin in 2006, I have returned each year, and the Bauamt archives have continued to provide archival architectural records for an expanding project. In the summer of 2012 I focused on buildings where members of the Bauhaus Group lived and worked before 1933, when the Nazi regime forced the school to close. Like the Exiles series, this work uses found vintage paper. Made in gouache and ink, the work is often derived from the most technical parts of the floor plans, and it breaks small sections of drawings into different iterations of similar forms, in a process that almost has the effect of turning the architectural vocabulary of the archival source material into a code of signs and symbols.
Included in this series are the former homes and workplaces of Herbert Bayer; Josef and Anni Albers; Johannes Itten; and Lyonel Feininger.
